Nothing can prepare visitors for the moment when they first glimpse Machu Picchu, in the heart of the Andes. Machu Picchu might have been a royal estate or sacred religious site for Inca leaders, but ultimately it is still a mystery. The citadel’s existence remained secret until the American archaeologist Hiram Bingham discovered it in 1911.

Today, thousands of people explore the world’s most famous wonder, Machu Picchu, even if only to see the sunrise or sunset.

If you are planning to travel to Machu Picchu with Destination Peru, you will get a minimum of 2 nights in the area. This allows you to do any hiking or exploring that you might want to do, in addition to a private tour and some free time to look around the city for yourself.

The fascinating aspect of a visit to Machu Picchu is the mystery that surrounds it's history. Discovered to the modern world in 1911, Machu Picchu still has archaeologists deep in thought about who lived there and why it was abandoned.

What we do know is that Incan royalty consistently braved The Inca Trail to visit Machu Picchu. We know that there was various types of farming and agriculture, as well as religious and residential sections of the city.

In 1911, Hiram Bingham was tracing the paths of the last Incan rebels who retired to Vilcabamba. During his journey he stumbled onto Machu Picchu by paying a small local Quechuan child to show him the family farm that was surrounded by Incan ruins.

Exploring Machu Picchu will surely be one of the most remarkable experiences of your life. The city itself is breathtaking and inspiring.

Outside of Machu Picchu, you have the jungle village of Aguas Calientes. This small town doesn't have any motor vehicles and is mostly set up to entertain tourists and visitors.

There is a variety of restaurants, bars, spas, and artisan markets available for you to peruse either before or after your visit to Machu Picchu. In addition, the town is named for hot springs that are located at the top of the main street.

Culturally, you will find the majority of the information and sites of interest to be in the ruins themselves.

Machu Picchu is located at approximately 7,700 feet above sea level. Almost a mile below Cusco, most travelers feel better while exploring the Lost City of the Incas.

Located in the area in between the high Andes and the Amazon rainforest, Machu Picchu is a unique climate known as the cloud forest. This means that rain is fair game every day, mostly in the mornings, and that temperatures should range between 40 degrees (at night) to 80 or 90 degrees (during the day).

Machu Picchu is home for wide variety of flora and fauna as the region is combined with the altitude and protection of the national park. It is an ideal breeding ground for more than 90 kinds of orchids, alisos, puya palm trees, and ferns. In addition, spectacled bear, wildcats, cock-of-the-rocks, colorful variety of butterflies and hummingbirds are unique in this national park.
