Rainbow Mountain 2026: The Complete Guide to Vinicunca and Palcoyo

Rainbow Mountain, or Vinicunca, went from a place nobody visited to one of the busiest day trips in Peru in under a decade. The photos are real. So is the altitude: the viewpoint sits above 5,000 metres, higher than any point on the Inca Trail. This guide is what we tell our own travellers before they go, including when we advise them not to go to Vinicunca at all and choose Palcoyo instead.

The colours come from mineral layers: iron oxides for the reds, iron sulphide for the yellows, chlorite for the greens. They were exposed as the glacier retreated, which is also why Vinicunca is a relatively new destination.

This is the single most important paragraph of the guide. Vinicunca is not a first-day activity. We schedule it no earlier than the third full day at altitude, and ideally after the traveller has already walked something gentler such as Sacsayhuamán or the Sacred Valley.

The essentials: where, how high, how hard

Travellers who fly into Cusco and do Vinicunca the next morning are the ones who turn back halfway, feel sick in the van or spend the afternoon in bed. There is no way to shortcut this with pills alone.

Palcoyo is a range of three striped mountains near Checacupe, reached by a road that climbs almost to the top. It is the alternative we suggest to about a third of our travellers.

Acclimatisation: the part most people skip

Mild symptoms such as headache, nausea and breathlessness are common above 4,500 m. They are a signal to slow down, drink and, if they get worse, descend. Our guides carry oxygen and are trained to recognise when someone should stop. Turning back is not failure; it is the correct decision, and we make it several times a season.

If you have a heart or lung condition, are pregnant, or have had altitude sickness before, talk to your doctor before booking and tell us. We can design an alternative day at a lower altitude.

Yes, if you are acclimatised and go early. On a clear morning it is one of the most striking landscapes in Peru. It is not worth it on your first day in Cusco or in the middle of the rainy season.

How the day unfolds

Around 3 hours of walking in total: 1 h 30 to 2 h up and about 1 hour down. The full day from Cusco is 10 to 12 hours including driving and meals.

Local families rent horses for most of the trail, but not for the final steep section, which you walk. Riding reduces the effort but not the altitude.

Yes, a small fee paid to the local community at the trailhead. It is included in our private tour; independent travellers pay it in cash in soles.

Vinicunca or Palcoyo?

Children who are well acclimatised and used to walking can, but we generally recommend Palcoyo for families with children under 12, and always after at least three days at altitude.

Expect around freezing at dawn at the trailhead, rising to 10–15 °C at midday in the dry season. Wind makes it feel colder at the viewpoint.
