Uyuni Salt Flat & Laguna Colorada

The tour begins at approximately 10:00 a.m. from our meeting point. Our first visit will be the Train Cemetery, where it is possible to observe a large number of ancient steam locomotives and wagons from the early days of the railroad, built mainly in France and England. Later, we will arrive at Colchani, whose residents extract salt using rudimentary tools.

Next, we will enter the magnificent Uyuni Salt Flat. Along the way, we will observe the "Eyes of Water," small holes in the salt surface where brine (salt-saturated water) bubbles up from below the surface crust. We will arrive at the Playa Blanca Hotel, built with salt blocks; its general structure is very rustic and, being located in the middle of the salt flat, it has a unique and unparalleled appeal.

We will head towards Incahuasi Island, located 102 km from the town of Uyuni. It stands in the center of the salt plain and is the highlight of today's journey due to its impressive flora and fauna, unique in the world. We will take a short walk to the top of the island to enjoy the wonderful landscape. Then, we will have time in the Uyuni Salt Flat to take beautiful and creative photographs.

Finally, we will begin the return to Uyuni, not before delighting in the natural spectacle of colors offered by the sunset.

During the rainy season, due to flooding of the salt flat, visits to attractions inside may be suspended without prior notice for safety reasons.

Around 9:00 a.m., we will begin our journey south. We will arrive at a viewpoint to observe the Ollagüe Volcano in the distance; this volcano marks a natural border with Chile and has fumaroles near the summit, as it is active.

Afterwards, we will head to the "High-Andean Jewels," a beautiful set of water bodies. The first is Cañapa Lagoon, surrounded by mountainous terrain and extinct volcanoes; the green color of its waters contrasts majestically with the vibrant-plumaged flamingos that inhabit the area. Then, we will visit Hedionda Lagoon, a quite peculiar place whose sulfur-saturated waters emit a characteristic odor. This lagoon is also home to flamingos and a wide variety of wild ducks and partridges.

We will spend the night at our "Los Flamencos" ecolodge, located at 4500 m a.s.l., a place where the colors of the landscape intertwine magnificently.

Our departure will be around 6:30 a.m. Today we will explore the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve of Andean Fauna. Along the way, we will see the Stone Tree, a very peculiar wind-shaped formation located in the heart of the Siloli Desert, at 4600 m a.s.l.

The highlight of the day is our wonderful colorful lagoon, but before heading there, we will visit the Sol de Mañana area, where we can observe bubbling mud fumaroles emerging from the depths of the earth. Then, we will begin our visit to the beautiful Laguna Colorada, which receives its name from the reddish tones of its waters (especially noticeable in winter), a phenomenon caused by the presence of plankton, specifically a microscopic alga of the species Dunaliella salina.

After lunch, it will be time to begin the return journey to Uyuni, a trip that takes about 6 hours. Along the route, we will pass by the imposing Valley of the Rocks and the picturesque town of San Cristóbal.
